Engineering Department

Those who ensure we make it home, who meet our commitments, who give us power, who are the life-blood -  The Engineering Department.

Our Enginemen provide propulsion, ensure our water supply, and give steam to our Galley and Vents. Electricity to our nerve centers; supplying power to our engines, electronic equipment, rudder, winches, machinery, and light and comfort; this is supplied by the Electricians.

The Shipfitters, our repairmen who maintain our hull, fix the leaks, build our cabinets, flush away our waste, coupled with the Damage Controlman, team up to ensure we are ready to sustain damage, fight fires, and remain afloat.

Four our entertainment and our vital sound powered systems, we depend on the Interior Communicationsman.

This variety, The Engineers, keep us afloat and underway.

  1. The first Motor Machinist Mate Chief on the 1096 was Nathaniel Kell who had been on two previous LSTs (the 378 and 1052). He crewed on the LST 1096 until her return to San Francisco from Japan after WWII.
